Born John Martin Barrie; December 23, 1860, in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1879, Barrie became editor of the Edinburgh-based magazine "The Idler," and in 1884 he moved to London to write for the magazine "Punch." In 1890, he wrote his first book for adults, "Peter Pan," which was published in three volumes by Macmillan's in 1911. In May 1916, Barrie married actress Mary Ansell at Holy Trinity Church, Kensington. In 1923, Barrie visited the United States where he toured with a production of his play "Mr. Jordan." He also visited Alaska with a production of "Peter Pan." In 1926 Barrie retired from the stage and devoted himself to writing.

He died of a heart attack on November 29, 1937 in Kensington at age 67.
