Upon graduating from high school, Jimmy went to work for a railroad that operated a number of branch lines in the area. He then became a section hand for the railroad. After a while, he moved up to what he considered "the best job on the railroad," assistant foreman, which enabled him to earn enough money to support his wife and three children after they were born.
