As a teen she had a couple of short stories published in teen magazines, but wasn't known to the writing world until she won First Place in the 2009 International Writing Contest sponsored by the American Society of Journalists and Authors. The contest was held at the prestigious Boston Book Festival, and Jenny's winning piece was based on her personal experience as a former foster child
