Jean-Jacques Annaud is a French-Italian film director, screenwriter, and producer. After making his feature debut with "The Bear" (1988), he became known for his epic films of the 1990s, including "The Name of the Rose" (1986) and "Apocalypse Now" (1979), but achieved worldwide success with his 2000 film "The Lover", which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. His other films include "The Bear", "Marco Polo", "Seven Years in Tibet", "Quest for Fire", "The Bear's Paw", "The Name of the Rose", and "Tristan & Isolde". Annaud was born in Paris to a Jewish family. He is the brother of French politician Dominique Annaud, who was also Jewish, and sister of filmmaker Juliana Annaud.
