James Sullivan was born in Omaha, Nebraska, in 1946. He received his MFA from the University of Iowa. His first collection of poems, Written for the Pleasure of Seeing, was published by the University of Iowa Press in 1972. His second collection, Window Glass, was published by Prairie Schooner Press in 1976
He has worked as writer-in-residence at the University of Iowa. His poems have appeared in numerous journals throughout the United States and England, including The Gettysburg Review, The American Poetry Review, The New England Review, The American Poetry Review Annual, Tiferet Magazine, Badlands, The Potomac Review, Southern Humanities Review, Quarterly West, The South Dakota Review and others.
