James Hadley Chase was born in The Bronx, New York, on May 19, 1910. He attended the City College of New York and Columbia University, where he took his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics in 1935. Two years later, he began doing freelance illustrations for the New York Herald Tribune and working on scripts for radio programs at NBC. His first book, Random Harvest (1943), was an immediate success
