In 1857 James moved his family from Philadelphia to New York City where he opened a bookstore and later became a publisher. In 1866 James established the first white home for African Americans located at 10th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan. The home was known as "Delano Place." In 1867 James established the first black newspaper in America, the New York Clipper.

In addition to being a publisher and philanthropist James Delano was also an author and successful playwright. He wrote two Broadway plays: The Unchristian and The Colored Woman's Protection Society produced by Edwin Forrest who also starred in both productions.
