James Dean was born on February 8, 1931 in Fairmount, Indiana. As a child, Dean was encouraged to pursue acting by his sister, who made him his first pair of leather-soled shoes. This inspired him to begin performing at the age of nine. He toured with a theater group that included Thomas Ewing and John Houseman, and continued to act into his teens
He spent several years in Europe before returning to the United States to pursue an acting career. He eventually gained fame as a movie star during the 1950s and 1960s.
