Jack Valenti was born in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. He received a University of Virginia degree in law and was admitted to the South Carolina bar in 1948. In 1949, he began his career in public service at the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). He was appointed executive vice president and general manager of the MPAA in 1951, and was elected president in 1962
Under his leadership, the MPAA became an international trade association for the motion picture industry. He served as executive director of the MPAA for 29 years until his retirement in 1981.
