J. Norman Collie was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1858, the only child of a Scottish mother and American father. He was educated in England at Cheltenham College and Trinity College, Cambridge. After receiving his doctorate in law (LL.D.), he spent two years teaching in India, then returned to Glasgow to practice law, joining the firm of Cuthbertson & Co., which was later merged with another firm
He went on to become private secretary to Sir Robert Munro, the Secretary of State for Scotland, and became a partner in the firm of Munro & Collie, which he also headed. It was here that he developed his profound interest in ancient history and ancient religions.
