J. Lee Roberts was born in Selma, Alabama on January 29, 1917. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and later received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Alabama. Roberts began writing while employed as a management consultant at the Birmingham Land Title and Trust Company
During this time he also wrote for the Birmingham-Jefferson (AL) Times and the Montgomery Advertiser. He published his first book, Who Killed J. Lee Roberts? (1966), shortly after leaving Land Title and Trust to become pastor of the First Baptist Church of Montgomery, Alabama, a position he held until his retirement in 1980.
While continuing to write and speak, Roberts moved to Florida in 1990 where he continued to write and research until his death on April 27, 2002.
