He received his M.D. degree in 1899 and afterwards practiced medicine in New York City for some years. He became interested in the study of philosophy while practicing medicine; and began to read widely in this field, especially in the works of Herbert Spencer, Herbert Spencers’ teacher John Tyndall, John Dewey, William James and others.

A few years later he devoted himself to writing on metaphysics and related subjects. A book entitled "A Primer of Science" which he wrote under the pseudonym of “The Philosopher” appeared in 1899; this work is still used as a text-book at schools of medicine throughout the country. Later came “The Philosophy of Science” (1902), “The Philosophy of Religion” (1904), “The Philosophy of Mind” (1906), “A Primer on Metaphysics” (1907), “A Primer on Ethics” (1908), “A Primer on Logic” (1909), “Creation Myths in Relation to Dogma” (1913) and many other books giving a comprehensive treatment of metaphysical questions.
