Irving Finkel is a writer and editor. He was born in Illinois and raised in New York City, where he attended public schools. He went on to study philosophy at the University of Chicago, completing his BA in 1969. Finkel received his MA in American Studies from New York University in 1974, and his Ph.D
in American History (specializing in the history of the American West) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1976. His earlier research was published in the Journal of the West, Journal of American History, Analyses in the History of American Society, and The Journal of Southern History. Finkel was for many years a member of the editorial board of The Journal of American History, and a contributor to a number of other scholarly journals.
