He was born in the province of Samosata, but subsequently lived for many years in Alexandria, Egypt. In his youth he was a disciple of Theodorus the Atheist, and later of Ammonius Saccas. In the latter part of his life he traveled widely throughout Asia Minor, leading a quiet life as a private scholar
