Hugh Walpole (1901 - 1983) was the pen-name of Hugh Cecil Dutton, a British novelist and short story writer, and a grandson of Sir Cecil Spring-Rice, the "uncrowned King of Spies". He is best known for his novel The Whim of the Whore (1953), which won the W. H. Smith Literary Award for Fiction in 1954 and led to his becoming a minor best-selling author.
