Hubert J. Goethals was born August 19, 1872 in Middelburg, Holland, the son of a master baker. He studied engineering at the University of Utrecht and received his Ph.D. in engineering from the University of Amsterdam in 1895
At age 22 he was appointed professor of mechanics at the University of Utrecht, where he remained until 1902 when he was appointed professor of mechanical engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology (now Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, NJ). He served as president there from 1911-1931.
