Howell Heflin was born in 1900 and died November 9, 1982. Heflin was an American author who wrote mainly westerns, but also some science fiction, plays, and mystery novels. Heflin's first novel, The Last of the Plainsmen (1938), was based on his own experiences as an archaeologist in the 1930s. It has been called "the first authentic western of the post-World War II era." His last novel, The Burning Hills (1972), was a science fiction/horror novel set in Arizona.
