H. M. Jones was born in South Carolina, but moved to Georgia as a small child. He attended the University of Georgia, where he received his bachelor's degree in Business Administration
After college he joined his father's business, H. M. Jones & Son, Inc., a family-run wholesale lumber company based in Atlanta, Georgia.
During this time he began his writing career by writing articles for various magazines on topics relating to the lumber industry. He later returned to school and received his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Georgia State University in 1965. He then began working as an actuary, but left that position after some time to begin another career as a writer.
His first book was published in 1977, and by 1983 he had published six more books including The Living Bible, The Great Commandments of Our Lord, and A History of Christianity Through the Centuries (Abridged). He died of cancer on September 25, 1998 at the age of 59.
