Herbert Bayard Swope was an American journalist during the Progressive Era and a member of the Algonquin Round Table. He was a writer for Vanity Fair, a syndicated columnist, and a political commentator for NBC's "Monitor" radio program. He wrote the first book about baseball, Baseball: An Informal History, which he copyrighted in 1925 before publishing it in book form in 1930 with John McGraw as the only contributor. In 1931, he published his autobiography entitled The Confessions of a Roving Editor.
