Dr. Henry Olcott was the founder of the Theosophical Society, which later became the Theosophical Society Adyar. He was born in 1832 in Salem, Massachusetts. At age fifteen, he joined his brother in publishing a small paper called The Muse, which aimed at the spiritual development of young people through religion, art, science and philosophy
In 1853, when he was twenty-one years old, he began to study chemistry at the Lawrence Scientific School in Harvard University. He studied under Professor Avogadro in Italy in 1860-61 and received his Ph.D in 1862 for a thesis on carbon dioxide in relation to animal life. Dr.
Olcott then settled in Madras (now Chennai), India, where he served briefly as superintending chemist in the government laboratory before returning to America. Dr. Olcott's interest in philosophy led him to take up the study of ancient religions and he devoted himself to this study for many years after returning to the United States.
