In 1853, when he was twenty-one years old, he began to study chemistry at the Lawrence Scientific School in Harvard University. He studied under Professor Avogadro in Italy in 1860-61 and received his Ph.D in 1862 for a thesis on carbon dioxide in relation to animal life. Dr.

Olcott then settled in Madras (now Chennai), India, where he served briefly as superintending chemist in the government laboratory before returning to America.
