Henry Mills Alden was born in 1876 in Easton, Massachusetts, the son of a minister. He attended Phillips Academy and Harvard University, where he studied law at the Law School, graduating with honors. He returned to Harvard for graduate studies in economics and social science. For the next ten years he taught at various schools including the University of Chicago
His career took him to New York City where he lectured on economics at Columbia University and wrote for leading magazines. He also worked as a publicist for corporations such as Standard Oil of New Jersey and United Fruit Company. In 1914, he became editor of The Saturday Evening Post.
From 1918 to 1934, he was managing editor of Harper's Magazine. He died in 1936.
