Martyn was a Scottish writer and traveller in India, whose travels there in 1776-1777 inspired his most famous work, A Journey from Bengal to England. In 1809 he published a series of letters from Calcutta, which was collected as A Tour in the Eastern Seas. A third book, The English Martyrs Abroad, was published posthumously in 1813.
