Henry M. Wriston was born in New York City on January 5, 1891 and died on March 22, 1986. He was the founder of the Bank of Manhattan and the first chairman of the Federal Reserve System. A graduate of Columbia University and Harvard Law School, he was a senior partner in Carter Ledyard & Milburn before becoming president of the Bank of Manhattan in 1931
On June 28, 1958 President Eisenhower appointed him Chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, a position he held until his resignation in 1961.
