Upon his admission to the bar in 1867, James began practicing law in Boston, but soon abandoned this for a career as an author. Beginning with "The Turn of the Screw", which appeared serially in 1879-80, James published novels, short stories, essays, travel books and biographies. His works show a deep interest in psychology and philosophy.

The tale of a young governess who is tormented by ghosts from her past is one of his most famous works. Other works include "The Bostonians", "The Portrait of a Lady", "The Princess Casamassima", "The Ambassadors", "Washington Square", "The Golden Bowl", and "The Buccaneers". James's last novel appeared posthumously under the title "Roderick Hudson".

He died March 22, 1916 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
