Henry Grattan was born in London in 1882. After leaving school he worked as a journalist and also as a sales clerk for a drapery and clothing firm. It was during this time that he began writing short stories and articles, including one which appeared in the Cornhill Magazine. He followed this with the publication of his first novel, The Museum, in 1906
In 1910 he published A Man from Ireland, which achieved instant success and still ranks as one of the best-selling novels of all time. He also wrote several other well-received novels including The Deemster (1911), The Bishop (1913), A Woman of No Importance (1915), The Plough and the Stars (1916) and many others.
