Henry Fairlie is considered one of the greatest British golf players of all time. He was born in 1873 at Abbots Langley, Hertfordshire, where he lived for his entire life. He was the son of James Fairlie, a colliery manager who took up golf while recovering from an accident at work. Henry Fairlie started playing golf at age ten, and travelled to Scotland with his father to play golf
After this trip he became an excellent player, winning the Hertfordshire Golf Union Amateur Championship in 1894. In that same year he played in the Gordon Bennett Cup against the United States, Canada and Ireland. He then went on to win three consecutive British Amateur Championships in 1897, 1898 and 1899.
