From 1900 to 1905 Armstrong worked as a reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat newspaper. In 1905 he began writing a series of novels that would eventually be published under the name "Anna Katharine Green".

After his wife's death in 1906, Armstrong moved to Florida to escape the winter climate of St. Louis. While living in Florida he published his first book, The Everglades: The River of Grass (1910).

He moved back to St. Louis in 1918 and resumed working at the Post-Dispatch until his retirement in 1941. Armstrong died on October 10, 1951 at age 80.
