Henri Nouwen was born in the Netherlands in 1930. He became a Jesuit priest in 1951, but left the order in 1966, and spent the next twenty years of his life working among the poor and homeless on Manhattan's Lower East Side. He wrote two acclaimed books on this experience: The Return of the Prodigal Son and The Way of the Heart. Nouwen died in 1998.
