Helen R. Hull was born in Wisconsin in 1905, but her family moved to Florida when she was still very young. As a child she loved to read and write, and would write stories for her siblings and neighbors, but it wasn't until she was in high school that she became serious about her writing. She wrote two novels before graduating; then she married and moved to California with her husband
There she wrote several more books, including five Westerns. Then she divorced and returned to Florida. Her first novel, The Bear's Den, was published in 1934.
She also wrote two children's books, one of which was adapted into a movie. She continued to write novels, short stories, poetry, nonfiction articles about writing, and children's books, including the popular series Who Put Bella in the Box? Her last novel was published in 1966.
