Martin Heidegger was a German philosopher and has been described as "the most important influence on 20th century thought." Heidegger grew up in a family of farmers and worked as a shoemaker before he received his doctorate of philosophy at Marburg in 1929. From 1929 to 1933, he served as an assistant to Edmund Husserl at the University of Freiburg. In 1933, he became a lecturer and, from 1934 to 1945, an associate professor of philosophy at the University of Freiburg.
