Heinzer was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to parents who ran a small grocery store. He attended college at the University of Nebraska, graduating with a degree in law. He then began his career as an attorney in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska. When the Great Depression hit, Heinzer found himself unemployed and unable to afford attending law school
He began writing all types of articles for newspapers and magazines to earn money for tuition. His first big break came when he was hired by the St. Paul Pioneer Press as a staff writer.
After the stock market crash in 1929, Heinzer wrote about the nation's economy and about how it would bounce back soon. He continued writing for newspapers and magazines until 1951, when he turned his attention to publishing books. His first novel was published in 1938, and since then he has written over 25 novels and hundreds of short stories and non-fiction books.
