H.B. Charles Jr. (born H.B. Charles), was born in Prentiss, Mississippi, and raised in Durham, North Carolina

After earning his bachelor's degree, he enrolled at Columbia University School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1953. The same year he married his first wife, Jane Keathly Charles, and the couple had two children: Evelyn Keathly Charles Foster (born 1953) and John Witherspoon Charles (born 1955).

Charles Jr.'s business career began in 1954 when he formed HBC Industries Inc., a company that manufactured metal health care products such as wheelchairs and beds for patients requiring rehabilitation after a hospital stay. In 1963 HBC Industries became a subsidiary of C S Corporation of Chicago, Illinois and C S Corporation became a subsidiary of Fisk-Napier Corporation which was later acquired by Duracell Company in 1968.
