Harvey MacKay was born in the small town of Gagetown, New Brunswick on January 5th, 1873. He died in Toronto on December 15th, 1963. Harvey MacKay began his working life at 16 years of age as a stage driver for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He became a clerk for the Hudson's Bay Company and eventually worked his way up to become a Manager of the Hudson's Bay Store at Fort George, Ontario. Through his own hard work and determination, MacKay built a business empire that included real estate holdings, lumber mills and sawmills, hotels and restaurants as well as other businesses such as a furniture manufacturing company. In 1912 MacKay married Annie Babcock and together they had three children: Hugh (born 1917), Robert (born 1920) and Jean (born 1923). MacKay was also known as "Auntie Mac" to many people who counted on his generosity throughout his life. MacKay died suddenly on December 15th, 1963 at the age of 84 and is buried in the MacKay family plot in Toronto's historic Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
