Harry Olsen was born in Hackensack, New Jersey and grew up in Minnesota, where he graduated from Roosevelt High School. He served in the US Army Air Force during World War II and after the war, he attended Northwestern University and became a journalist for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. In 1950, he began his broadcasting career with KSTP Radio and WCCO Radio in Minneapolis. In 1953 he became the host of “The Quiet Corner” on WCCO Radio
He hosted the show until 1965 when he left to become the director of the Minnesota Public Broadcasting System. In 1968, Harry Olsen became the host of “Minnesota Tonight” on KSTP Radio. In 1972, he was named Director of Programs for MPR, a position he held until his retirement in 1985 at age 65.
Harry Olsen has been inducted into two Halls of Fame: The Writer's Hall of Fame in 1998 and The Golden Age Radio Hall of Fame in 1998.
