Hank Early taught English at Memphis State University until he retired in 2006. He was born in Newton, Mississippi and graduated from the University of Mississippi in 1967 with a Bachelor's degree in English. He received a Master's degree from the University of Memphis in 1974 and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville in 1981
While a graduate student he taught English at East Tennessee State University, where he received his doctorate. He has published four books of poetry, one novel, and several volumes of literary criticism.
