Hammond Innes was born in London, England. He attended school at Rugby, Cheshire, and later took an engineering degree at Cambridge University. He served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, flying on B-24 Liberators. After the war he entered the legal profession and became a partner in the firm of Messrs
Routh & Co., solicitors, of London. A poem written by him while at Cambridge is included in both "The Oxford Book of English Verse" (1926) and "Poets Celebration" (1935). Also published are "I Dream of Reading", "A Listener's Odyssey", and his autobiography, "A Life Unfolding".
