Born and raised in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, she moved to California after graduating from high school and attended California State University at Sacramento (CSU) while working full-time as a photographer's assistant. She graduated with a BA in English and received her MFA in theater arts from CSU. She was an instructor at CSU for five years, teaching creative writing and English as a second language to adult students.
