Gordon Savage was born in Walla Walla, Washington. When he was five, his family moved to Seattle, where he grew up. After high school he attended the University of Washington where he majored in music and played trombone. He worked for several years as an insurance agent before joining the United States Marine Corps
He served as a security advisor at the U.S. Embassy in Moscow and later as an instructor at the Marine Security Guard School at Quantico, Virginia. The culmination of his military career came in 1972 when he retired with the rank of major after twenty-four years of service.
