Giorgio Bassani was born in Milan in 1936. After spending time in the German Democratic Republic, he returned to Italy and began writing at the age of twenty-one. Bassani's work is characterized by his meticulous research, an acute sensibility, and his attention to detail. He has won many prizes for his novels, including the Strega Prize (1972), the Premio Strega (1980), the Premio Feltrinelli (1985), and the Premio Viareggio (1993)
His novels have been translated into English, French, Greek, Spanish, Polish, Russian, Hebrew, Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Arabic. One of his most famous works is La notte (The Night), which was awarded Italy's prestigious Strega Prize.
