Gilbert Frankau was born in England and qualified as a doctor and surgeon at the University of Edinburgh. After qualifying, he continued his medical training in London, qualifying in 1974. He specialized in throat and ear surgery and then worked at the Royal National Throat Hospital, London, before moving to Australia. He settled in Sydney where he worked as a general practitioner and also worked as a plastic surgeon
He became involved in foundation work after his wife died of cancer; he eventually became foundation chairman of the Australian Council of Plastic Surgeons (ACPS). He died suddenly on June 14, 1998, while on holiday in Scotland.
