G. H. Finn was born in Dunedin, New Zealand, on 16 August 1879. He studied medicine at Otago University and graduated with an MB ChB in 1908
He worked in Dunedin as a surgeon until the First World War broke out, when he joined the RAMC serving throughout the Middle East and Italy. He was MRCS LRCP Edin FRCS LRCP Edin (1912) and FRCS Edin (1916).
