George Stephenson was the English inventor of the steam locomotive, which changed the history of transportation in Europe and eventually in the Western Hemisphere. His invention not only made the locomotive more powerful than its horse-drawn predecessors, but it also permitted trains to travel faster and farther. By 1829, Stephenson had built three engines that were capable of pulling trains at speeds of 9 mph (15 km/h). The following year, Joseph Locke, a member of Parliament, asked Stephenson to build him a locomotive for hauling coal wagons
This engine was also capable of pulling nine wagons at speeds of 5 mph (8 km/h). The success of Stephenson's engines led to his appointment as Chief Engineer for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1829. He continued to make improvements within his own company until he retired in 1859.
