George Seldes was an American journalist and author. He was the son of Russian Jewish immigrant parents who were active in the labor movement, and was himself a union organizer. He joined the staff of PM magazine at age 21 and remained there until 1942. His columns and editorials, which were syndicated by Scripps-Howard newspapers, established him as one of America's leading writers and critics on labor and politics

He was a founder of the Congress for Cultural Freedom, a group which aimed to make cultural criticism more socially conscious. He was also a founder of the Committee for Cultural Freedom, which helped to finance the magazine Encounter. Seldes also wrote for such publications as The Nation, The Objectivist, and The New Leader (the latter edited by the later labor lawyer Louis Lomax).
