George Horne was born in New York City, on April 30, 1831. He graduated from the University of New York (now Columbia University), and was admitted to the bar in 1853. He became active in politics as a member of the Democratic party, and he served as United States Senator from Connecticut, from 1873 until his death. He is best known for his work with the International Exposition at Chicago in 1893
His other notable achievements include his fight against child labor, his role in creating the Interstate Commerce Commission, and his work on behalf of women's equality. Horne died on November 4, 1897.
