During high school he took up playing the guitar and formed a band, eventually leaving to enroll at the London College of Music. While there he became friends with Eric Clapton. He also met Ravi Shankar while studying there, and later invited Shankar to play on his solo album All Things Must Pass (1970).

After graduating from college he took up session work for other artists including Delaney Bramlett and Bobby Whitlock. He also began touring extensively with the Beatles, playing guitar, bass and keyboards. His first solo album, George Harrison (1970), found moderate success but did not break him into the mainstream of popular music.
