George Ella Lyon was born in Oxford, Mississippi, and received a bachelor's degree in music education from Mississippi State University. She began playing the piano at the age of four and continued to practice with music teachers throughout her life. Her work as a teacher and pianist led her to New York City, where she attended Juilliard School of Music and studied piano performance under John Cratchit. Through her involvement with the American Guild of Organists and other professional organizations, she became acquainted with many of America's foremost composers and musicians
She also taught at Juilliard and was the first woman to head a division at one of America's leading organ companies. Lyon was a member of the Keyboard Department of the American Guild of Organists and served as President from 1973-74. She also held many other positions within that organization during her life, including Vice President (1975-77) and Chairperson (1977-79).
