George Augustus Sala was a French artist, known for his paintings of British subjects. Sala was born in Rouen on 12 October 1797 and died at Canvey Island on 13 July 1875. In 1835 he was awarded a prize from the Society of Arts for his painting The Boyhood of Raleigh, which marked the first time a portrait had been awarded the society's gold medal. In 1846 he went to Italy, where he painted portraits of King Charles Albert of Piedmont and Queen Maria Adelaide d'Assisi. After spending some time in Paris during the early 1850s, Sala returned to London in 1856, but his health failed him shortly after and he was forced to retire from painting.
