Gary Hart was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1938. He is the youngest of seven children and spent his early years in rural Texas where he worked on the family farm. As a young man, Gary Hart attended Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now Texas State University) where, despite taking time off to help care for his younger siblings, he earned his B.S. in Industrial Education. After graduation he took a job teaching second grade at Fair Oaks School District in northern Fort Worth.
He was twenty-six years old when he married Elizabeth Hart on July 24, 1960. The couple would have three children: Anne, Martha and Peter.
