G. W. Mitchell was born in 1927 in the town of Sowerby Bridge in West Yorkshire, England, to a family of modest means. He was educated at Woodhouse Grove School, a Quaker school in the nearby village of Hebden Bridge, and went on to study at the University of Leeds
He worked as a teacher at one time and also served as a technician in the RAF, but one day he decided to write a book about "that other life," which he refers to throughout his writing career. In 2005, Mitchell's debut novel The Last Great Cause was published to wide acclaim by HarperCollins UK. In 2008 he released his second novel, The Burden of Command, which was a national best-seller and named "Book of the Year" by the Sunday Times. In 2012 he published his third novel Long Shot, an international best-seller that has been translated into twenty-three languages.
In 2015 he finished his fourth novel, Two Faced Man, which is scheduled for release later this year. In 2016 Mitchell finished his fifth novel The Last Witness, which was released October 28th by HarperCollins UK and October 31st by HarperCollins US. It is scheduled for release in Canada in 2017 .
