He received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg in 1927 and his PhD from the University of Berlin in 1931. Dr. Lichtenberg became a research associate at the Neurological Institute of the University of Wurzburg in 1929, and he remained there until his emigration to the United States in 1938.

He moved to the United States, where he continued his work as a researcher at Harvard Medical School until his retirement in 1968. His work describes the physiology of nerve impulses and has been described as "a classic."
